Oprah’s Own Network has been on a roll lately with the exclusive bookings of A-List celebrities for Oprah’s Next Chapter plus, there is no denying how much we love how Iyanla Vanzant has a knack for fixing the lives of others on Fix My Life. Now it seems as though Lady O is bringing her wild card out with the multi-year deal the Own Network has signed with Tyler Perry.
Own reported Monday that Perry will produce, write and direct two series for the cable network, slated to premiere next year. This will be the first scripted programming introduced to the network.
“I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come,” Winfrey said in a statement. “We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series. He has an incredible to illuminate life stories and character in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world.”
With Perry and Winfrey’s close friendship this announcement comes as no surprise. It’s unclear as to what type of scripted shows Perry will produce, but we know he has a record for producing shows that particularly appeal to the African-American community and being that Oprah is known to appeal to a mainstream audience, it will be interesting to see what Perry will create and how Own fans will respond.
