Is Coldplay’s Video Princess of China Ft. Rihanna a Tad Racist?

By Tastemaker — April 27, 2012

Coldplay gives us a snippet from his official video “Princess of China” featuring Rihanna, but despite all the special effects and exaggerated costuming that we generally love when RiRi debuts in a video, this one seemed to pinch a nerve with some Coldplay fans. Although Rihanna is suppose to be depicting a Chinese Princess, the video shows her with many hands which resembles an image of Indian goddess Shakti, which some are saying isn’t at all a depiction of a Chinese princess. Other critics of the video are going as far as to nitpick at Rhianna’s high multi-bun with chopsticks, which they say make her look more Japanese than Chinese and that the overall video is stereotyping Asian culture.

What some people are saying:

“this video is a tad bit racist.. not to mention the image of the many armed goddess is INDIAN ( hindu) not Chinese” britchicknusa125

“maybe they want to tell.that china is really big country with production, that rihanna is like that in music, that whatever she do or she did it will be followed and she is a big product .look deeper.”SophieMayra

“hmmm…another example of just how ignorant the West is of the East =_=” Mixing Indian, Thai, Japanese and Chinese together DOES NOT = Princess of China >,<” I think “Princess of Asia / Asian Princess” might be more appropriate if they weren’t sure. The song’s not bad…the video’s not bad…it’s just the CONCEPT that’s OOOOOOOH SOOOOOOO WROOOOOOONG”~BBC007

What do you think about the video? Are people being too sensitive towards artist creativity? Leave us a comment.
