Gym Fires Back at Gabby Douglas’ Claims and Questions her Credibility
Did Gabby lie to Oprah during her interview about being subjected to racial taunts at the gym where she once practiced? According to Gabby Douglas’ former gym in Virginia Beach, Excailbur Gymnastics, they say she’s exaggerating and that in fact they would say Gabby was one of the favorites, and has no idea what she is talking about.
“Really I was shocked and very hurt,” former coach Dena Walker tells USA Today.
“I wish to defend the children that trained with her and supported her when she attacks them with these allegations,” says Excailbur’s CEO Gustavo Moure. “Is Gabrielle a credible person just because she is an Olympic champion? She is not giving any names or dates, leading us to believe that the accusation is fake.”
Moure says the gym has had more African Americans in elite and on the national team than any other gym in the country.
“We are good people. We never were knowingly involved in any type of bullying or racist treatment, like she is accusing Excalibur.”
Apparently supporters of Douglas aren’t happy. One woman wrote on Excalibur’s facebook page:
“I find it really gross that a gym run by, apparently adults, would come out of the gate and defame and publicly ridicule a 16-year old young woman for speaking for her experiences with other female gymnasts.”
