Grammy award winning hip hop artist Lecrae and World Champion basketball player Dwyane Wade join forces for the launch of the National Campaign “This Is Fatherhood”. The campaign will begin with the nation’s first ever “Fatherhood Challenge”, where contestants will submit a song, photo, video or an essay that answers the question, “What does fatherhood mean to me.” The call to accept submissions started May 6th on the “thisisfatherhood.com” website. Participants will compete for cash prizes and a trip to Washington D.C.

The “This Is Fatherhood” campaign has joined together a diverse set of cultural influencers and fatherhood experts to support the competition. Our judging panel is comprised of elite professionals who have won Grammys, Pulitzer Prizes, and British Academy Awards. Our diverse group of collaborators are anchored by the U.S Department of Justice’s Center for Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, and an array of pre-eminent nonprofit and media organizations. The Fatherhood Challenge is one of the first initiatives of its kind that takes a preemptive approach toward the fatherless crisis by creating awareness of the issue among youth and adults alike through utilizing the power of social media and emerging technology.

“This Is Fatherhood” is a cohort of cultural influencers and organizations devoted to restoring America’s commitment to healthy fatherhood.

Chrisette Michele is coming to Atlanta’s Chastain Park this weekend (Friday May 24th) as part of the Atlanta Jazz Festival concert series and after a 18 month hiatus from the spotlight, other than a few features here and there, we’re all excited that she’s back better than ever.

I couldn’t have been more excited to catch up with her via phone. I had so much to talk about that I felt that she was that friend that I hadn’t talked to in months, but once we started chatting you felt like you picked up where you last left off.

If you’ve had had an opportunity to check out Chrisette’s newest singles from her fourth album ‘Better’, you quickly notice a more bold and confident woman who seemingly grew up and found the woman she really wanted to be. I love it!

During our interview, Chrisette shares a lot. We talk about her beauty regimen, her fashion craving for mixing high and low, her struggles with body image in a new book, her favorite You Tubers , and social media and its affects on relationships.

Check out the interview below:

Tastemaker: What do you love most about coming to perform in Atlanta?

Chrisette: Atlanta has changed so much over the years. It’s become a mecca for young people who are pursing their dreams in acting and music, so the demographic has changed immensely. It’s such a gratifying place because you feel like you are performing amongst your peers for that reason.

Tastemaker: What can fans expect from your performance in Atlanta during the Atlanta Jazz Festival Weekend?

Chrisette: It will be a lot of fun. I’ve performed in Atlanta so many times I almost feel like it’s home. As a matter of fact, I lived in Atlanta for a little while right before I got signed, so I have a lot of history there. A lot of the songs that I have recorded have been recorded in Atlanta. So, it’s definitely still got a lot of the same soul that it use to have. I’m the same girl coming with my band and we’re just going to rock out. We’ll be singing songs from all of the albums including the mixtape and the new album on the way ‘Better’ to promote some new songs. But I think it will be a really really fun time.

Tastemaker: We admire you being that same girl, but you must admit your look has changed. What was the motivation behind that?

Chrisette: I get bored super easy and I’m always playing with fashion. I’m always traveling and seeing new things. I was in Europe a lot over the fall and a little bit over the winter and I got to see a lot of really fun and exciting new things. It’s kind of a hipster meets Grace Jones. I guess that could be sort of the inspiration behind my new look.

Tastemaker: Speaking of style do you have a stylist or do you prefer to style yourself?

Chrisette: I’d much rather style myself.

Tastemaker: Do you prefer retail or thrifted finds and why?

Chrisette: I like high-low. I like the idea that you can mix and match thrift shopping with vintage shopping and then mix that with something like Giuseppe Zanotti or Marc Jacobs and then mix that with a Forever 21 tank top. It’s a lot of fun. Pairing high and low makes me feel that I relate to a lot of different people and I don’t have to be focused on one thing.

Tastemaker: What’s your hair regimen and what do you consider to be your go-to products to maintain your mane?

Chrisette: Right now I’m in love with Shea Moisture products, you can find them at any Target or Wal-mart. I love to use their shampoo and conditioner and then I like to go back and condition for a second time after my first rinse of conditioner to sort of make my hair nice and thick. They also have a nice gel that I love that doesn’t make your hair hard, actually makes it really hair shiny and helps the curls to get nice and tight. You know we like our curls to be in circles…i’m a little obsessed with my circles. They also have a great oil spray that I use over my hair and adds a super amount of sheen–great for girls who have their hair colored.

Tastemaker: You’re not a girl who is afraid to rock a bold lip! What’s your favorite lip color and why?

Chrisette: My favorite lipstick color is a hot pink called Schiap by NARS. It’s a matte and it stays on all day. I first apply Make Up Forever’s hot pink lip liner.

Tastemaker: Has social media ever affected your business or personal relationships?

Chrisette: I literally hate talking on the phone. Even with my management, God bless them for dealing with me, but the phone makes me feel like my hand is attached to my ear and I can’t use my arm. It’s kind of silly, but that’s just the way I feel when I’m on the phone. I also feel like if you are on the phone, you have to come up with the answer right away, and a lot of times I rather think about what I want to say before I answer. Especially when I’m on the phone with executives, makes me feel like I’m under pressure.

Social media affects me in every aspect of my life. In regards to relationships with a boyfriend or just with a friend in general. A lot of times you feel like you can’t put a picture up of the fun you are having because it may end up on some website the next day. You can’t even post up a picture of you and your guy friend or someone you like or just want to hang out with because other people’s opinion will get involved. As oppose to you just having some fun with showing people ‘Oh look who I like’ it’s never simple that way.

Tastemaker: What’s going on with all the tattoos. Are they real or were they drawn on for your new video?

Chrisette: I’ve been collecting tattoos for quit awhile. So yes they are real. I guess i’ve been so covered up and conservative. I was at a photo shoot for ‘Better’ and my mom picked out these gold sequin booty shorts and said “Chrissy you should wear these” and I was like ‘you’re kidding’ and she said “no I’m serious”. I put them on, I did the photo shoot, Derek Blanks showed me the picture and I was like ‘Oh My Gosh that’s my favorite picture’, all of a sudden out of nowhere I felt like showing a little bit of skin was kinda my way of saying ‘I’m comfortable in my skin, I’m comfortable looking the way I look’, so I began to show my skin a little bit more .

Tastemaker: We love to connect with our readers, just as you like to connect with our fans and one of our reader’s wanted to know what is a quote or inspirational message that gets you through your day?

Chrisette: My favorite scripture is Psalms 91. Usually when I read a scripture I read the entire chapter. Psalms 91 talks about having a hiding place under the shadow of the Almighty, knowing that is a place that you can go to when the world is up against you and you feel alone. So Psalms 91 gets me through a lot of tougher moments. Sometimes I have to know there is something larger than life that is taking care of me and that’s God.

Tastemaker: What do you do to relax and unwind with friends?

Chrisette: I like to go on You Tube and watch the tutorials. I like outfit of the day tutorials and how to style your natural hair and nail tutorials. I’m a little obsessed with all the girly tutorials that are on You Tube.

Tastemaker: Speaking of You Tube. Do you any favorite bloggers, You tubers or instagramers you like to follow?

Chrisette: I have a few. There are a group of girls on You Tube called My Natural Sistas who are really really dope with their hair and body journeys. I love instagramer Lover4_Fashion. She’s dope and does the best outfits of the day out of all the girls, in my opinion. For food, I’m a little bit of a foodie, there is a girl that has a really cool you tube channel and does really cool recipes, Easy To Be Raw .

Tastemaker: What are you working on outside of music that fans can anticipate?

Chrisette: Sure. I have a book that I’m working on called ‘Fat Vegan’. It’s a book about me having struggles with body issues in the music industry and how I overcame that. The book also doubles as a recipe book for all the recipes that I’ve come up with since i’ve stopped eating meat. We’re looking at a publish date at the end of the year, around Christmas; there is no set date but it’s something I’m working on. I also just did a special for Culturlist on Centric TV and that will be airing on a Sunday.

Melissa Lanz is practically like every other mother is America; trying to figure out this thing called work and family balance. A former internet marketing executive, Lanz ditched her day job to promote good eating habits in the midst of a national health crisis. Embracing her love for food, cooking and family, Lanz created The Fresh 20 in April of 2010, the answer to every families question of “what’s for dinner?”

Striving to bring fresh food back to the table and reduce the amount of processed ingredients used by American households, Lanz created The Fresh 20 as an online meal planning tool that gives you a 20-ingredient meal plan for five nights a week. Lanz, also released her first cookbook, out now, filled with more than 125 recipes, prep guides and fun family pictures; so you’ll always have a food plan for the family within arms reach!

We caught up with Lanz to find out how she does it all as a mom, wife and entrepreneur and how her fresh approach is changing the family dynamics around the table.

Tastemaker: What was your motivation behind starting The Fresh 20?

Melissa: “I have two boys that are seven and eight and you know how crazy it can get in a household. I started The Fresh 20 because I was in a corporate job working 14 hour days, traveling a lot and my kids were really young. Although my kids had a great diet, because the babysitter would feed them steamed vegetables and great fresh food, my diet was horrible. I’d eat bad food over the sink while sending someone an email. At that point I began to realize that my kids would see what my idea of family food culture was and would start to make bad food choices based on what my husband and I were eating. Sometimes as women we can get so caught up in the work that we are doing because we are results oriented. Often times we want to see results so we can see the fruits of our labor, but as a mom, the fruits of our labor are in front of us everyday.”

Cucumber Carpaccio

Tastemaker: How did you get the nerve to transition from corporate professional to entrepreneur?

Melissa: “It’s interesting, because the topic of ’am I happy in my job’ is coming up in our society more than ever–especially for women. There became a moment when I realized that I was so unhappy in my work and unhappy with what I was contributing to the world, that I had to make a change for my own personal survival. I encourage anyone who gets to that point, where everyday is miserable,to look at their life and figure out ways in which they can start to make strides to either go out on their own or find a career that is igniting them everyday instead of depleting them. It’s very hard to overcome the fear of the uncertainty. I left a high paying job, but I literally got to the point where my happiness mattered more than money. My husband and I made the conscious decision that we wanted to take back some of our freedom. For me, the paycheck became a trap. I would never tell anyone to just leave their job. Make small changes in your lifestyle. Try creating boundaries in your work schedule; as you make small changes you start to have more flexibility.”

Tastemaker: What is your personal mission statement?

Melissa: ” I want to use what I have to help others get with they want.”

Skirt Steak

Tastemaker: How do you balance your work and family life as an entrepreneur?

Melissa: “I start my day an hour earlier than my family, because once they get up it’s on! It’s hard, but sometimes I have to even force myself to disconnect from my work so that I can spend two to three hours with my kids, because it’s all going to be there when I get back. Time is our most valuable resource. My family is a huge supporter of The Fresh 20, and my kids understand that sometimes when they come home from school, it’s quiet time while mom is working until 4:00 p.m. I set boundaries for my family so they can set expectations for our time together.

Tastemaker: What are the top three things that make you happy?

Melissa: “For me it’s cooking, entertaining and mentoring other business women. I wanted to make sure any business that I started incorporated one or all three of these things. Fortunately for me, my business does just that.”

Tastemaker: Where did the idea for the title of your company and now book derive from?

Melissa: “I started playing around with the meal plans and tried to figure out a balance of not having waste at the end of the week. If I put five recipes together there may be 80-ingredients on the list and then I’m not using everything. The fresh comes from wanting to make sure people knew that I was about unprocessed and fresh foods and reducing the consumption of processed foods for families all over the world; so that’s where ‘The Fresh’ part came in. The 20 really came from the idea that you can do more with less. You don’t have to have an 80- ingredient shopping list to feed your family for a week. 20 just seemed to be the number that allowed me to have a good mix of vegetables, grains and proteins to mix and match so that I would get the right nutrients and calories. It was about efficiency, less waste and unprocessed foods.”

Vegetarian Nicoise Salad

Tastemaker: How do you stay connected with your 75,000+ subscribers?

Melissa: “As a business woman I respond to every email that I get and I make sure there is an open path to reach me or anyone on my team. I really want everyone that is part of The Fresh 20 community to realize that there is a team of people that are dedicated to making sure that they have kitchen success. So, whether it’s people tweeting us while they are cooking dinner, or emailing us while they are they at the grocery store, we want to be responsive and make sure that our community knows that we’re not some machine that isn’t listening. We are a team of people on the other end of the social platform that care about what our customers are doing.”

Tastemaker: Where do the ideas of each recipe come from?

Melissa: “We’ve grown to over 75,000 subscribers so now we have several different plans in the works and we have a recipe developer as well as a head chef that oversees the plans. So, it really comes from what’s available; they take their cues from what’s in season.”

The naysayers that arguably said that OWN TV couldn’t and likely would not make it, are basically eating their words and rushing to set their DVR’s as to not miss a beat of Oprah’s Next Chapter with some of the most intriguing people of our time. While some critics were trying to figure out how Oprah was going to make it work after leaving her powerful post as Queen of daytime talk, Oprah had her sights set on teaming up with her good friend, producer Tyler Perry.

Tyler Perry, was charged with creating original content that could possible take the two-year-old network to it’s next level. Tyler delivered. Debuting this month (May) OWN will debut two new scripted series, a first for the network. The one-hour ensemble drama “The Haves and Have Nots” is set to premiere Tuesday, May 28 at 9pm ET/PT and the sitcom “Love Thy Neighbor” will premiere Wednesday May 29th at 9 p.m. ET/PT with two back-to-back half-hour episodes.

We caught up with Tika Sumpter, Crystal Fox, Renee Lawless and Johnathan Schneider of “The Haves and Have Nots” and Kendra C. Johnson, Palmer Williams and Patrice Lovely of ”Love Thy Neighbor” in Atlanta to find out about their part in such a groundbreaking experience for them as well as Perry and Winfrey.

Tika Sumpter on her role as Candace Reese:

“I’m excited to have people see me in this role because I’ve never played a so called bad girl. I feel like a lot of the times when I was reading the script that people will say ‘I Love You Tika, but I hate you at the same time.’ I’m excited to get some emotion from people. So, I’m just excited to play something different in my career as an actress. Almost every major superstar has been on a soap opera. I was on One Life to Live like eight years ago and I didn’t realize how fast the scenes were going to be. I remember doing a script a day in soaps and you also had to get into character fast, so I kind of pulled from that.”

Crystal Fox and Johnathan Schneider on their excitement about scripted TV:

Crystal: “I’m excited about scripted television like this, television that is delectably dysfunctional. When you finish watching it you have to check yourself. You will enjoy all of the mystery and murkiness and when it’s over you will talk it over with your friends and you will say…’is that me’? So to do quality scripted work is what I’m excited about.”

Johnathan: I think Tyler has raised the bar but he’s also changed it. The Haves and Have Nots is scripted television but the dialogue is so wonderful that in a real way, from our stand point, it was like reality. The arguments were real, the problems were real. Much it I don’t remember doing cause we did it once and it was done. As an actor what a wonderful experience that is!

Palmer Williams on having Tyler and Oprah as a boss:

“We have two phenomenally successful entertainment moguls that are actually representing us as we try to represent them in their investment of time, energy, money and faith in all of us. With both of them being faith based people, how many people can say in a corporate situation that they can can pray before they start work. It’s great to go to work and find someone that has a moral fiber, because these shows are talking about scandal and escorting and infidelity and things like that, but there is still a moral core to all of it. Even Though we act a plum fool, there is still a message. Even if you don’t go to church, you can watch any works that Tyler Perry has done and see that he is not ashamed to put the gospel of Jesus Christ in his shows.

We love finding new places in the Atlanta, and although Sunny’s Hair and Wigs has been around for about six year’s this was the first time we had heard about the celebrity go-to boutique for all things hair! We were invited to a private event highlighting the season’s hottest beauty trends. You can only imagine the fun 50 of Atlanta’s most stylish Tastemaker’s had while instantly transforming our look with Sunny’s clip-in extensions and high-quality wigs.

CBS Better Mornings Atlanta co-host Tracye Hutchins

While we all mixed and mingled to the tunes of DJ Verse, we were treated to skinny cocktails by Sinless Margarita, fresh bites from Genki Noodles and Sushi and yummy cake pops courtesy of Candy Cake Company.

Spa Sydell hooked my nails up with a creamy nude tone perfect for Spring and demonstrated their revolutionary Intraceuticals treatment on my face (see below), an innovative skincare system, that left my skin beaming throughout the weekend!

Can’t wait to return to Sunny’s. They told me they create custom wigs and being that I’ve never had a custom wig designed, I’m super excited about the opportunity! Stay tuned, I feel a major transformtion on the horizon!
